Coaches Education

US Soccer Federation (USSF) Coaching Education

Thousands of coaches have attended and successfully completed an US Soccer Federation coaching course since they were first developed in 1971. Regardless of the level of certification or license attempted, the prime objective of the coaching education program is to provide all coaches from the beginner to the most advanced with up-to-date theoretical and practical knowledge.

Coaching education begins at the state level with introductory 4 hour "Youth Modules", and the 18 hour "E" License courses. These courses cover elementary principles of coaching and the "E" License prepares and is required for coaches interested in the 36 hour "D" License. Successful completion of the "D" course certifies coaches with either a State or National License. Both licenses are non-expiring and are awarded following the completion of both theoretical and practical testing. Candidates wishing to attend a US Soccer National Coaching School to take the "C" License course must have earned and held a National "D" License for a minimum of 12 months.

Technical Tuesday

Each week, State Technical Director Greg Maas provides a training session or article on a particular topic for the benefit of our membership and general coaching community. “I truly believe the information will help coaches foster improved player development by providing correct and progressive coaching methods,” Maas said.

Utah Youth Soccer is under the direction of Technical Director Greg Maas. Coach Maas has earned his USSF “A” License, USSF National Youth License, NSCAA International Premier Diploma and the NSCAA Master Coach Diploma (pending). Coach Maas also serves as a National Staff Coach and Instructor with U.S. Soccer, US Youth Soccer and the NSCAA. Coach Maas is entering his 4th year as the U-17 Head Coach for Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer – the 2008 MLS U-17 SUM Cup Champions, and capped another undefeated run finishing 3rd in 2009; and he has served eight years as a Region Staff Coach with US Youth Soccer's Region IV Boys ODP. Coach Maas can be reached by email at gmaas@utahyouthsoccer.net
